Critic Taken to Task

Those of us who follow art wait for the Cathy Curtis review of any show at Newport Harbor Art Museum to see how she will manage to bash it (“An Essentially Hollow ‘Gesture’ in Sculpture,” Oct. 25).

She says that she would have preferred to focus on the “vulnerability, power, allure and implied movement” rather than a historic progression. These are all implicit in the pieces. Had the curator chosen that route, we can be sure she would have faulted him for failing to show the historic progression.

Further, the museum has invited high school students to a program of ballet beautifully coordinated with the idea of sculpture in space. This would have been worthy of note.

Since Cathy Curtis often has insight that is helpful, someone should help her understand that her hostility impairs her judgment when the Newport Harbor museum is her subject.

It is becoming a standing joke because of its predictability.
