ORANGE : City Council Candidates Disclose Campaign Finances

Groups and residents here will have raised and spent about $200,000 to elect a new mayor and two council members in Tuesday’s election.

Mayoral candidate Joanne Coontz, who started fund-raising last spring, led with $44,600 raised by the Oct. 22 disclosure deadline. Political action committees that have contributed to her campaign include the Building Industry Assn. of Southern California, the Lincoln Club of Orange County, the Orange Firefighters and the Orange Police Assns.

Fred L. Barrera, the mayor pro tem who running for mayor, has raised more than $21,000, including a $7,000 loan he gave to himself. His contributors list includes the Firefighters Political Action Committee, individual supporters and numerous local businesses.

With $40,700, candidate Dan Slater has raised more than the other nine running for City Council. His supporters include the Firefighters PAC and a $7,000 contribution from Daniel Slater Real Estate Sales/Orange Realty.

Incumbent Mark Murphy had raised $34,300 by Oct. 22, including checks from the Lincoln Club of Orange County, several real estate companies, the Firefighters and Police PACs and the Orange County Automobile Dealers Assn. PAC.

Corinne Schreck has raised nearly $24,000, including a $13,000 loan to herself. Michael Alvarez raised $20,200, including a check from the Firefighters PAC and a $2,000 loan from his family’s trust. Mara Brandman has collected more than $7,000, largely from individuals, with a $1,000 loan to herself. Adolfo Perez Jr. has raised nearly $3,000, with $900 in loans to himself.

The other candidates, mayoral candidate Juan Pablo Serrano Nieblas and council candidates Joseph Vanderhoff, Jim Wronski, David W. Johnson and Gregory M. Reynolds, had not raised enough for a financial disclosure.
