PORT HUENEME : City Gives OK for Auto Storage Yard
Despite residents’ objections, the Port Hueneme City Council has granted a permit allowing a temporary automobile import storage yard on a 10-acre site near a residential area on Hueneme Road.
After seven residents spoke against the project during a public hearing this week, the council voted unanimously to allow the facility to operate for three years.
“I am truly disappointed with the council’s decision,” said Katy Greenstreet, a resident near the site between J Street and Ann Avenue. “They just don’t listen to the will of the people.”
Neighbors have argued that the yard, which will be used to store vehicles that enter the country through the Port of Hueneme, would increase traffic and noise and diminish the character of their neighborhood.
But city officials said the facility will not increase traffic, because the cars already pass the site on their way to storage in Oxnard.
Yard owner Michael Poston said he will build a turning lane off Hueneme Road that will prevent traffic jams.
If the facility brings serious problems to the area, council members said they have the power to withdraw the permit.
