THE EAGLES, “Hell Freezes Over” ( Geffen )***

Some bands would be insulted by the term “hitmaking machine” because it suggests a lack of passion, but it’s a tribute to the character and craft of the Eagles how easily they’ve returned to hitmaking form after a 14-year break.

Songwriter credit--A review Nov. 6 of the Eagles’ album “Hell Freezes Over” misstated the credit on the song “Learn to Be Still.” It was written by Don Henley and Stan Lynch.

Already in the national Top 40, “Get Over It” is a snarling, high-energy slap by Don Henley and Glenn Frey at ‘90s political correctness--one of four studio tracks on this otherwise live reunion collection.

“The Girl From Yesterday,” written by Frey and Jack Tempchin, showcases the melancholy country side of the band, while “Love Will Keep Us Alive,” a non-Eagles composition, overcomes the conventional lyrics with the sweet romanticism of Timothy B. Schmit’s vocal. Best of all is Henley-Frey’s “Learn to Be Still,” which carries much of the soft, philosophical resonance of “The Last Resort.”

The remaining 11 tracks, ranging from 1972’s “Take It Easy” to Henley’s post-Eagles “New York Minute,” were recorded from an MTV special last spring in Burbank--and they, too, are so still seductive we’ll probably be hearing most of them on the radio for months. What was it the Eagles said about the long run?

New albums are rated on a scale of one star (poor) to four (excellent).
