Mission Is to Keep Shoppers in City

Share

The city’s annual drive to entice buyers from venturing outside city for their holiday purchases begins Tuesday.

Called “Catch the Community Spirit . . . And Shop Mission,” the campaign opens with a massive mailing of 80,000 letters to residents. The message will be simple: spend holiday dollars in Mission Viejo’s 1,800 businesses.

“We want to remind everyone that when they purchase something in Mission Viejo, a portion of the sales tax goes to our city,” said Ben Meharg, chairman of the city Economic Development Commission.

On Friday, a few days after the mail campaign begins, about 70 street banners will be draped throughout the city, emblazoned with slogans like “Shop Mission.”

Meharg said that, “When you think about how many residents Mission Viejo has (83,000), and the number of times they will go shopping during the holiday season, being a hometown shopper makes a lot of sense. Residents could spend more time at home to enjoy family and friends, as well as (cause) less air pollution.”
