COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Michel’s Hat Trick in Second Half Lifts UCI in Water Polo

Jean Michel scored three second-half goals to help UC Irvine, the eighth-ranked team in the nation, to an 8-5 water polo victory over fifth-ranked UCLA in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game Sunday at UCLA.

UCLA (13-10, 2-6) led, 3-0, early in the second quarter before Irvine (8-11, 3-5) rallied to tie it with the help of a two-point goal by Omar Amr in the final minute of the half.

UC Irvine outscored UCLA, 3-2, in the third quarter and, 2-0, in the fourth.

In the Rolex-ITA Southern California men’s regional:

Hansen wins singles title--Brett Hansen, a former UCI player currently at USC, won the singles title with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory over Roger Pettersson of Nevada Las Vegas. Pettersson is ranked 13th and Hansen 39th in the nation.

The doubles final involved two teams from Pepperdine. Simon Aspelin and Troy Budgen beat Chris Hill and Mike Jessup, 6-2, 7-6. Aspelin and Budgen are ranked sixth in the nation.

In nonconference women’s soccer:

Hawaii 2, CS Fullerton 1--Nicki Arakawa was credited with a goal that went off a Cal State Fullerton player then into the Titans’ goal to break a 1-1 tie in the 76th minute. Michelle Rice had tied it three minutes earlier for the Titans (6-9-2).

In the Long Beach State round-robin water polo tournament:

Long Beach State splits two--The 49ers lost to 10th-ranked Air Force, 11-8, but came back to beat Loyola Marymount, 14-10.

Tim Ault and Tim Finley had three goals each on the loss to Air Force. Long Beach (5-15) opened a 3-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and the teams. Long Beach led, 7-3, with four minutes left in the third quarter but were outscored, 8-1, the rest of the way.

Ian Taylor and Finley had five goals each in the victory over Loyola Marymount (17-12). Air Force (13-8) also beat Loyola Marymount, 14-9.
