TV and Radio Serving Up a Smorgasbord of Coverage : Elections: Networks, cable and independent stations schedule an extensive look at tonight’s political results.

Anyone wanting to keep tabs on election results tonight will have no problem finding TV or radio stations with extensive coverage. Even a prime-time comedy is getting into the political act.

KCBS-TV Channel 2 will feature network coverage with Dan Rather and Connie Chung from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., followed by an episode of “Rescue 911.” Its “Action News” will then present a three-hour block of election coverage starting at 9 p.m.

KNBC-TV Channel 4 will feature a half-hour election special at 7:30 p.m. The regular lineup of prime-time comedies will air from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.--two episodes of “Wings,” “Frasier” and “The John Larroquette Show,” with cut-ins every half-hour on election results. The station will then feature uninterrupted election coverage from 10 p.m. to midnight. “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno” will begin at midnight, and “Late Night With Conan O’Brien” will start at 1 a.m.

In addition, real-life election fever will get a playful twist on NBC’s “Frasier” when all of the Crane men become involved in the political process.

KTLA-TV Channel 5 will show “Raiders of the Lost Ark” at 7:30 p.m., followed by its regular newscast and election coverage at 10 p.m.

KABC-TV Channel 7 will provide coverage of the nation’s congressional and gubernatorial races on “The ’94 Vote: Election Night” at 7 p.m. From 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., two episodes of “Home Improvement” and an episode of “Grace Under Fire” will air, interspersed with local election updates. Following the regularly scheduled local news at 11 p.m., an expanded edition of “Nightline” will air at 11:35 p.m. with reports from Peter Jennings and David Brinkley.

Election coverage on KCAL-TV Channel 9 will begin following the Lakers basketball game, at approximately 8 p.m., and will continue until about 1 a.m. Wednesday.

KTTV-TV Channel 11 will handle the election in an expanded edition of “Fox News at 10.” The broadcast will continue “as long as necessary,” officials said.

“The MacNeil/Lehrer News-Hour” will focus on the elections at 6 p.m. on KCET-TV Channel 28. Then at 10 p.m., KCET will feature a live edition of its “Life & Times” series that will focus on the returns. Political analysts and community leaders will appear on the special, which will have continual updates of voting results.

Cable’s CNBC channel will also feature extensive coverage during the evening. “The Cal Roberts Show” at 8 p.m. will have former officials from the Democratic and Republican national committees as guests, while “Equal Time” hosts Mary Matalin and Susan King will analyze the evening’s trends at 8:30 p.m. Several writers and political analysts will appear on “Rivera Live” at 9 p.m. with host Geraldo Rivera, while Matalin and King will return to conclude the coverage at 11:30 p.m.

C-SPAN and CNN will also offer continuous coverage. C-SPAN will start its coverage at 5 p.m. while CNN will provide results starting at 7 p.m.

On radio:

National Public Radio affiliate KPPC-FM (89.3) will feature overviews of the races and initiatives from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on “AirTalk,” and coverage will resume at 8 p.m. until midnight.

KPFK-FM (90.7) will start reports on the election at 8 p.m.

KNX-AM (1070) and KFWB-AM (98.0) will begin continuous coverage starting at 4 p.m.

KCRW-FM (89.9) will start its election programming at 6:30 p.m. with news from National Public Radio, local analysis from “Which Way L.A.” host Warren Olney and statewide reports from KQED in San Francisco.
