COSTA MESA : Poll Due on Banning Cigarette Machines

Share

Members of the Costa Mesa substance abuse committee will poll as many residents as they can about whether cigarette machines should be banned throughout the city or just where minors have access to them.

Committee members convened last week at City Hall to hammer out the questions in the poll, results of which will be sent to the City Council for review after today’s election, said Karen Ursini, chairwoman of the five-member group.

“But all this may be a moot point if Proposition 188 passes,” said Ursini, referring to the initiative that would repeal all local ordinances on smoking.

If the initiative does not pass, then cities can enact local smoking ordinances.

The substance abuse committee asked the City Council a month ago to consider passing an ordinance that would ban tobacco vending machines from the city, contending minors too often are able to purchase cigarettes. The council said it would study the matter at one of its future study sessions.
