Gov. Steve Merrill has written a letter of apology to a Chicago woman who was refused lodging at three motels in Manchester because she carried no ID showing her name.

The Econo Lodge, Howard Johnson and the Queen City Motor Inn refused to rent Linda Friedberg a room Sept. 7, though she had $1,000 in cash. All three said they were protecting the safety of the business and guests.

Friedberg said she will never visit New Hampshire again. “I’ve never met people who had such an attitude about them. There was no compassion in them,” she said.
