SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO : Site for School Buses Reviewed by District

The Capistrano Unified School District is considering an eight-acre site in Aliso Viejo for a bus yard to help house its expanding transportation fleet.

The district’s five-acre bus yard in Dana Point is crowded and cannot accommodate vehicles needed for a growing enrollment, according to officials.

“It is very tight,” said Dave Doomey, the district’s executive director of facilities planning and funding. “There’s no doubt we have a need for another facility.”

The district is considering a parcel at Laguna Hills Drive and Liberty Street. The school district board discussed the Aliso Viejo site during a closed session Monday night. It is one of four sites that district officials are reviewing, district spokeswoman Jacqueline Price said.

Officials have said they need a site to park about 100 school buses, and want a new bus yard ready by September, 1996.

This summer, district officials considered building a bus yard on district-owned land on Aliso Creek Road but later decided against the move. Residents argued that the yard would increase noise, worsen traffic and hurt property values.
