SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Sheriff’s deputies, continuing the search for the man who kidnaped and raped a 12-year-old girl in Valinda last week, will be combing the area this morning, distributing flyers with information about the suspect.

The girl, whose name was not released, was walking to school Nov. 3 on Azusa Avenue near Glenloch Avenue when a man asked her for the time, sheriff’s officials said. The girl tried to walk away but the man had a gun.

He then dragged her by the arm to a pickup truck and drove the girl to McLaren Street in Valinda, where he raped her and then drove a mile and released her.

The suspect is described as a Latino in his 30s, 5-foot-5, weighing 140 to 150 pounds. He has brown eyes, short, wavy black hair and a thick mustache. He was wearing maroon sweat pants and drove a light blue GMC pickup with gray interior and gray lettering on the tailgate.

Steve Hansen, principal of Giano Intermediate School in La Puente, where the girl is a student, said the school has reviewed safety procedures with its 950 students and sent information home to parents.

About half of Giano’s students walk to school, Hansen said, and the incident has made them more cautious. Hansen said school officials are advising students who walk to school to walk in groups.
