LONG BEACH : City Panel Approves Site for Asphalt Plant
The EcoPave asphalt recycling plant seemed to have finally found a home last week after the city’s Planning Commission unanimously approved a proposed site at 1646 E. 32nd St. But Southland Industries, a mechanical engineering firm near the site, objects to having an asphalt plant as a neighbor.
Southland Industries plans to appeal the decision, arguing that establishing an asphalt plant would not be the best use of the site. “We’ve filled out the application (to appeal),” said company spokeswoman Diane Reavis. “We’re just waiting for the (company) president’s signature.”
EcoPave’s previous efforts to build the plant in North Long Beach were rejected by the Planning Commission and City Council after residents protested. EcoPave officials then filed a $2.2-million claim against the city.
