GLENDALE : City Seeks Volunteers to Lend Disaster Aid

Share

The city’s Office of Emergency Services will hold an orientation tonight for residents interested in serving as volunteer disaster service workers in the event of an earthquake or other emergency.

Officials hope to recruit several hundred residents from across the city, who will be trained, registered and sworn in as official disaster volunteers. So far, nearly 100 people have enlisted in the program, which began in September.

“We still have a need for many more persons to become involved in this program, and we encourage all Glendale residents and businesses to consider becoming volunteers,” said Gerald Shamburg, the city’s emergency services coordinator.

No special skills are required to become a disaster worker, but city officials said they are looking for people who can assist in the following areas: shelter workers to assist the Salvation Army and Red Cross; licensed amateur radio operators to help set up communications stations; people fluent in foreign languages to help with translation, and area leaders to help coordinate disaster training in their neighborhoods.

The orientation session is at 7 p.m. in the community room of the Perkins building, 141 N. Glendale Ave. For information, call (818) 548-2121.
