WESTLAKE VILLAGE : Grant to Benefit Support Groups

More cancer patients and their families will be able to participate in free support groups, under a $25,000 grant recently awarded to the Wellness Community in Westlake Village.

“This is a really wonderful gift,” Wellness Community Executive Director Suzanne Wedow said.

Wedow said the grant, from the New Jersey-based Fanny and Svante Knistrom Foundation, will be matched by other donations and used to build offices and meeting rooms at the group’s facility at 530 Hampshire Road.

At present, the Westlake Village space only has one room that can be closed off for privacy, making it difficult to schedule more than one program at a time, Wedow said.

Wedow said construction is slated to begin in December on three meeting rooms and four offices where cancer patients and their family members can discuss issues related to the disease and consult with psychotherapists.

Open since June, 1991, the Wellness Community-Valley/Ventura serves about 125 people a week, officials said.
