Shaquille O’Neal scored 46 points and grabbed 20 rebounds in Charlotte, N.C.

Hakeem Olajuwon’s scored 43 points and grabbed 16 rebounds in Indianapolis, Ind.

But the efforts of both players were overshadowed by something else that happened in their respective games Wednesday night.

In Charlotte, it was Nick Anderson’s layup with one second left in overtime that gave the Orlando Magic its 130-128 victory over the winless Hornets.

The Magic, which rallied from an 18-point deficit, led by two points in overtime on five occasions, but the Hornets stayed even to the final second as Robert Parish hit two free throws with 22 seconds left.

Charlotte’s Alonzo Mourning, who sat out the first three games because of a toe injury, finished with 26 points in his season debut. Larry Johnson had 25 points for the Hornets, and Dell Curry 20.

Horace Grant had 25 points and 15 rebounds for the Magic.

Houston 109, Indiana 104-- Olajuwon’s 43 points and 16 rebounds carried the Rockets past the Pacers in Indianapolis, but it was the crowd’s angry reaction to an official’s call that got most of the attention.

Angry Pacer fans pelted the Market Square Arena floor with trash and caused play to be suspended for 10 minutes after Reggie Miller, who had 25 points, attempted a three-point shot with nine seconds left but was called for an offensive foul.

Indiana committed 14 personal fouls and was called for three of its eight technicals in the first quarter, two of which were charged to Coach Lary Brown at the 5:16 mark, when he was ejected.

San Antonio 109, Utah 101--Led by David Robinson’s 30 points and 17 rebounds, the Spurs ended a seven-game regular-season losing streak to the Jazz with the victory in San Antonio.

The result also gave the Spurs a measure of revenge against Utah, which eliminated the Spurs in four games in the first round of the Western Division playoffs last season.

Sean Elliott scored 21 points for San Antonio. Karl Malone led Utah with 23 points and 15 rebounds.

New Jersey 110, Chicago 109--Kenny Anderson hit a game-winning jumper with 17 seconds to play as the Nets squandered a late 10-point lead but came back to defeat the Bulls in East Rutherford, N.J.

The victory in their home opener was the Nets’ first after three losses in Texas under new Coach Butch Beard.

Benoit Benjamin, seven of nine from the field, scored 22 points and had a team-high 13 rebounds for the Nets. Scottie Pippen led the Bulls with 28 points.

Sacramento 108, Seattle 100--Mitch Richmond scored 28 points and Walt Williams 19 as the Kings defeated the SuperSonics in Tacoma.

The King victory broke an eight-game losing streak to Seattle, and Sacramento won for the first time on the SuperSonics’ home court since April 9, 1990.

Shawn Kemp led Seattle with 21 points and Sarunas Marciulionis had 20.

Phoenix 106, Atlanta 102--Kevin Johnson made four free throws in the last 11 seconds to give the Suns the victory at Phoenix.

After Johnson made his first two foul shots to give the Suns a 104-100 lead, the Hawks took a timeout. Mookie Blaylock missed a three-pointer and Dan Majerle got the rebound, passing to Johnson, who was fouled again with five seconds left.

Danny Manning scored 30 points, 16 in the third period.

Philadelphia 98, Washington 97--Dana Barros’ steal and layup with seven seconds left earned the 76ers and new Coach John Lucas their first victory of the season, over the Bullets in Philadelphia.

Jeff Malone had 22 points for the 76ers, including 13 in the fourth period when Philadelphia rallied from an 18-point deficit. Tom Gugliotta led the Bullets with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
