SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

There is a real treat in store for shoppers venturing down Ojai’s main drag. The Earthlings Outlet on Ojai Avenue offers beautiful clothing lines for women and children at wholesale and less than wholesale prices.

Earthlings clothing is designed by Ojai resident Dawn Ceniceros. This is a business with a philosophy, which is to “look for products which respect and honor the earth.” All of the clothing is made from 100% certified organic cotton. There are plenty of sound reasons to buy organic, not the least of which are protecting water quality and preventing soil erosion.

But don’t assume this is clothing for hippies. Earthlings are carried by such upscale retailers as Barneys New York and Nordstrom department stores. The children’s line is especially beautiful. Dresses, leggings, pinafores, T-shirts and hats are in wonderful colors. Prints, solids and stripes are all cleverly designed to be layered, mixed and matched. Dresses run from $10 to $33, pants and leggings from $10 to $15.

There are a couple of racks of “damaged merchandise” with even greater markdowns. (Inspect these clothes carefully; most damaged pieces are nearly perfect, but some items are not worth purchasing.)

The baby and toddler line is also deliciously sweet. A natural cotton teddy bear is $12 and makes a perfect first doll. Receiving blankets made of soft, pure, organically grown cotton are perfect for wrapping newborn babies of nervous first-time parents. For another new baby gift, we chose a one-piece romper with matching cap, cleverly packaged in an egg crate. It cost $15, and this gift would have been at least $30 at a department store.

Store manager Leslie Martinez knows her merchandise inside and out and can help you find whatever you need. The women’s line features natural dyes called “fox fibre” in beautiful shades of green and brown. A canvas “gardener’s jacket” is $40; at Nordstrom the same jacket is $105. A long-sleeve Henley T-shirt is $15. Sweat shirts and leggings are $15 and $14.

While Earthlings clothing is environmentally correct, shopping at this outlet is also economically correct.
