Child Support Sets Collection Record

Recent sting operations and increased staffing helped the Ventura County district attorney’s office set a one-day record for child support collections in the county, officials said.

On Oct. 31, the district attorney’s Child Support Division collected $254,519 in child support payments--besting by about $20,000 an earlier record set Nov. 1, 1993, Deputy Dist. Atty. Stan Trom said. The office collected about $28 million in support payments in 1993.

“We’re excited that we have been able to make strides in this area,” Trom said.

Trom said recent collection efforts placed Ventura County first among medium and large counties in the state and seventh in California overall. The rankings, which were publicly released Nov. 1, were compiled by the state legislative analyst’s office in Sacramento.

But even with recent gains in collections, Trom said an estimated $100 million in back child support payments remains on the books in the county.
