Daily News to Lay Off 75 Workers

About 75 composing room workers at the Daily News of Los Angeles have been given 60 days notice of impending layoffs, as required under federal law.

The workers, whose contract expired Nov. 2, are being replaced by a new computer pagination system that the Woodland Hills-based newspaper says would eliminate the need for manual layout and composing work.

The Daily News said the first layoffs would occur from Jan. 9 to 23.

The composing room workers, who are represented by the Southern California Typographical Mailers Union Local 17, voted to strike earlier this month but have not publicly stated a deadline for the strike. Gerry Curran, Local 17 president, said the union would continue to negotiate with the Daily News to try to save the jobs.

Under the federal Worker Adjustment Retraining and Notification (WARN) Act, employers of 100 or more workers are required to notify employees in writing 60 days before mass layoffs or compensate them for 60 days of work.
