NBA ROUNDUP : O’Neal’s 41 Points Don’t Defeat Ewing

When he’s playing against Shaquille O’Neal, Patrick Ewing usually finds a way to win. Thursday night in New York provided yet another example.

Ewing, hampered by four fouls for most of the second half, got open for a 17-foot fadeaway jumper with two seconds left to give the New York Knicks a 101-99 victory over the Orlando Magic, spoiling a 41-point, 17-rebound night by O’Neal.

“I was just playing my game,” said Ewing, who had 24 points but only two rebounds and one block in 26 minutes. “I got in foul trouble, and Orlando made a good run for the lead.”

O’Neal scored eight points in a row to cut New York’s lead to 99-97 with 49 seconds remaining. He grabbed a defensive rebound, then muscled inside for a basket to tie the score with 11 seconds left.

Knick guard John Starks drove upcourt before passing to Ewing on the right wing, where Ewing launched his game-winning shot.

O’Neal said the last play took the Magic a bit by surprise.

“I thought they were going to call a timeout,” he said. “We were kind of in limbo. Starks penetrated, and I went to get Starks. Patrick made a great shot.”

Charles Oakley scored 16 points and had 12 rebounds for New York. Anfernee Hardaway scored 27 and Nick Anderson 19 for the Magic.

Detroit 112, Indiana 110--Joe Dumars scored four points in the final minute as the Pistons came from behind to beat the Pacers at Auburn Hills, Mich.

Detroit trailed by 17 points in the third quarter before rallying to win its third consecutive game.

Grant Hill led the Pistons with 23 points and Terry Mills scored 20 and had 11 rebounds. Rik Smits scored 25 for Indiana.

Cleveland 108, Milwaukee 88--Mark Price’s three-pointer started a 27-9 run in the third quarter as the Cavaliers defeated the Bucks in Cleveland.

Buck rookie Glenn Robinson, making his second appearance since signing a 10-year, $68-million contract, scored nine points on three-of-13 shooting, with four rebounds, two turnovers and one block.

Portland 104, Sacramento 84--Clifford Robinson scored 25 points to lead the Trail Blazers over the Kings at Portland, Ore. Mitch Richmond scored 23 for Sacramento.
