SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO : Hankey/Rowse Cottage to Be Commemorated
The San Juan Historical Society today will commemorate the renovation of a house that was under threat of the wrecking ball a year ago.
The Hankey/Rowse cottage, at 28232 Ortega Highway, was built around 1883, according to historical society members.
Last year, the City Council did not want the house razed as part of a proposal for a housing subdivision because the cottage is on the city’s list of historic and cultural landmarks.
A local contractor and his wife bought the cottage and one of the subdivision lots, where they relocated the structure and renovated it.
During a noon ceremony, a bronze plaque will be installed at the house. The public is invited.
