HELPING OUT: He may have lost his voice, but Glenn Gershan has gained a lot of new friends. Gershan is the Valley College student with cerebral palsy whose electronic voice keyboard was stolen recently, denying him the ability to communicate (B3). . . . Since word of his situation got out, dozens of people have offered their help.

MOVING ON: To his surprise, the Rev. Paul Egertson, pastor at St. Matthew’s in North Hollywood, has been elected bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. It’s a surprise because he supports gays and lesbians in the ministry, and the church doesn’t (B11).

At a Universal City lunch Friday, Archbishop John Foley, in charge of TV and film for the Vatican, said Pope John Paul II won’t do TV interviews, even to plug his hot new book, “Crossing the Threshold of Hope.” . . . Says Foley: “The Pope does not feel secure that translations will always capture the nuances of what he’s saying.”
