I’m afraid Stephen Moore (Letters, Nov. 6) needs a local history lesson. In his foolish call for partisanship in city elections, Moore falsely points to what he calls my “antics and efforts” as mayor to make Irvine a “nuclear-free zone.” One problem: I never proposed that Irvine be a nuclear-free zone.

For the record, my “antics and efforts” as mayor did produce the following for Irvine: an open-space preservation program ratified by more than 80% of Irvine’s voters; curbside recycling; the toughest toxics and pollution controls in the country; special housing and transportation programs for the elderly and disabled; stepped-up support for our police; investment in earthquake and emergency preparedness; award-winning child-care programs; and an end to salary discrimination against women in local government.

Incidentally, we accomplished these things while cutting waste, setting aside a multimillion-dollar “rainy day” reserve, and earning the highest bond rating for any city our size in California. All of these achievements involved Republicans, Democrats and Independents setting aside partisanship and joining together for the good of our city.
