A 16-year-old girl was in extremely critical condition late Saturday after being struck by a hit-and-run driver while leaving a school homecoming dance, Burbank police said.

The girl was flown to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center after the accident Friday night. Her companion, a 16-year-old boy, was treated for a broken arm at Thompson Memorial Medical Center in Burbank and released, Burbank Police Lt. Van Miller said.

Police did not identify the two youths, but said the girl had just celebrated her birthday.

The couple was hit by a car traveling down the wrong side of the street after leaving the Glendale High School formal dance at the Castaway Restaurant, 1250 Harvard Road, Miller said.

A vehicle described as a black or dark blue-gray, 1983 to 1987 Chevrolet Camaro was seen “speeding from the parking lot,” Miller said. “Then a witness heard some screeching of tires, presumably from the accident.”

After striking the young couple, the driver fled the scene.

According to the restaurant’s director of catering, Rod Westmaas, the Castaway hosted three events Friday night: the homecoming dance with about 350 teen-agers, a meeting of Armenian students from UCLA and a wedding party.

Police believe the driver was attending one of the events.

The Burbank Police Department is asking anyone with information about the accident to call (818) 953-8653.
