Peter Angelos may not leave Los Angeles Monday with a belief that Baltimore is any closer to a deal to attract the Rams. But neither is St. Louis, and the Baltimore Oriole owner can at least take comfort in that fact.

“I’m convinced the deal with St. Louis is not a done deal, and that makes me optimistic,” said Angelos, who met for four hours with Rams President John Shaw Saturday night in Los Angeles. “As far as I’m concerned, Baltimore is still very much in the running.”

Angelos remains confident the Baltimore package, which includes a new stadium and virtually all the perks St. Louis is offering, will be strongly considered.

There has been one major obstacle to a Baltimore deal--eventual control of the franchise. Angelos would like a majority share of the team, but Ram owner Georgia Frontiere wants to retain majority interest.

But Angelos said he is convinced after Saturday’s meeting that the issue can be resolved.

“We don’t have a problem with someone outside the state having ownership in the team. We’re interested in who controls the team, primarily for assuring it remains in Baltimore,” Angelos said.

“In documents that are prepared, there would be a separate understanding that the team could not be moved out of Baltimore unless the Baltimore ownership agreed to that. Operating control is another matter, and that, too, can be assumed without complete ownership.”

Angelos wouldn’t say that Shaw has agreed to such stipulations, “but I don’t think it’s a problem,” he said. “It would just be the last item to be resolved.”
