Nebraska Stays on Top of Both Football Polls

Top-ranked Nebraska maintained its lead over No. 2 Penn State, and Alabama climbed to No. 4 Sunday in The Associated Press college football poll. The Cornhuskers topped the Nittany Lions, 39-23, in first-place votes and hold an overall lead of 18 points in the media poll. Nebraska (11-0) and Penn State (9-0) also are 1-2 in the USA Today-CNN coaches’ poll. USC is ranked 13th.

Hawaii (3-6) earned a 34-0 victory over Southeast Missouri State (6-5) in Honolulu on Saturday night.

Minnesota Viking defensive coordinator Tony Dungy has refused an offer to coach Michigan State, The Detroit News reported. Rick Neuheisel, former UCLA assistant who is now Colorado’s quarterbacks and receivers coach, is said to be a candidate to replace George Perles. . . . Oklahoma Coach Gary Gibbs will resign effective at the end of the season, The Daily Oklahoman reported. . . . Miami Coach Dennis Erickson said Frank Costa will remain the starting quarterback, despite being benched in Saturday’s 17-12 victory over Pittsburgh. Senior defensive tackle Pat Riley will miss the rest of the season with a torn ligament in his left knee. . . . Texas noseguard Stonie Clark was injured in a hit-and-run accident and will miss the Baylor game on Thanksgiving Day, Coach John Mackovic said.

Motor Sports

Mark Martin overtook Rusty Wallace in the battle for second place in the final Winston Cup standings by winning the season-ending Hooters 500 in Hampton, Ga. After engine problems in two consecutive events short-circuited Wallace’s battle with Dale Earnhardt for the title, an ill-handling car and a penalty for speeding on pit road relegated Wallace to a 17th-place finish two weeks ago at Phoenix and moved Martin within 75 points going into the 328-lap race at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Wallace’s season ended after he ran over a brake caliper thrown from the car of pole-winner Greg Sacks when he hit a wall on lap 72.

Clinton Anderson of Alpine, Calif., who has clinched the top fuel hydro world championship, remained in critical condition Sunday after crashing his boat on Saturday.

Miscellany

Angel pitcher Joe Magrane suffered a cracked rib and lacerations on his pitching arm in a one-car accident near his home in St. Louis late last month, the club said.

Bethany College defeated defending national champion UC San Diego, 5-4, on penalty kicks after four scoreless overtimes in the NCAA Division III men’s soccer playoffs in Bethany, W.Va. Trenton State defeated host UC San Diego, 4-3, in overtime for its second consecutive NCAA Division III women’s soccer championship.

Mexico, needing a two-goal victory over the United States to qualify for the Under-17 World Championship in Ecuador, managed only a 2-1 victory in San Salvador, El Salvador and failed to qualify. Costa Rica, which defeated Canada, 3-1, qualified, as did the United States and Canada.
