If he had it to do over again, Terry Donahue said he would have kept Sharmon Shah, Wayne Cook, J.J. Stokes and Kevin Jordan in for another series Saturday night at Tempe, Ariz. Instead, he pulled them late in the fourth quarter of a 59-23 defeat of Arizona State.

Cook finished with 380 passing yards, best of his career and fourth-best in school history. Four hundred was a possibility against a porous Sun Devil defense.

Shah finished with 180 yards. Two hundred was tempting.

“I didn’t know, and it wasn’t a priority,” Donahue said. “I pulled Wayne when they pulled (quarterback) Jake Plummer. That told me they had given up. And Skip Hicks needed some playing time (in place of Shah).”

Cook knew the end was near when the offense trotted on the field for the series with 3:12 to play in the third.

So did Stokes. “I told Coach (Wayne) Moses that we were going to get Sharmon his touchdown,” Stokes said. “I didn’t know it was going to come in one play.”

That was a 65-yard run, longest of Shah’s career.

“We were all happy for him. I just wish it had been a screen pass,” Cook said.
