HUNTINGTON BEACH : Volunteers, Supplies Needed to Build Homes
Volunteers and donated building materials are being sought to help build three condominiums for low-income families.
A meeting for those interested will be held at 7 tonight in Room 8 at the Civic Center, 2000 Main St.
Habitat for Humanity of Orange County Inc., in cooperation with the city’s redevelopment agency, is building the housing project, said Stephen V. Kohler, project manager for the city’s Economic Development Department.
The homes will be built at 7862 Ronald Drive, between Warner and Slater avenues, on an abandoned, city-owned water-well site. The homes, all with three bedrooms, are expected to be built next spring, Kohler said.
The project will be part of 95 homes built in 1995 in Southern California for the Jimmy Carter Work Project, said Barbara D’Amore, Habitat for Humanity executive director.
Homes are sold to families with a 20-year, no-interest mortgage. Families selected must put in 600 hours of labor, called “sweat equity,” to build their homes or their neighbors’ homes.
