LA MIRADA : Repairs Under Way on Two Creek Park Dams

City crews have begun repairing two weather-beaten dams in Creek Park.

Water runoff generated by winter storms over the past several years had eroded land that had kept the cement barriers in place. Without repair, the dams, which help irrigate the park, would have shifted out of position or collapsed, city officials said.

Crews started the $80,000 project last week by adding soil and large boulders to the edge of the man-made creek running through the middle of the park.

The park’s five dams were installed in the 1960s and ‘70s to ease the flow of water running through the stream, which is fed by a county flood control channel that collects rainwater from the hills of Whittier and La Habra Heights.

“Otherwise, the water would come through that flood control channel and tear that park right up,” said Perry Turigliatto, the city’s environmental director.

The repairs should be completed in mid-December.
