THOUSAND OAKS : Residents Get City to OK Speed Bumps

Share

As all five City Council members hit the “yes” buttons to approve a set of seven speed bumps on Calle Tulipan in Thousand Oaks, a group of homeowners from the residential street cheered and applauded.

The residents had been asking for speed bumps on the street between Avenida de Las Plantas and Avenida de Los Aroboles for more than a year, but traffic studies showed average daily flow of cars on the street was too low to warrant the traffic-slowing devices.

After hearing public testimony at a meeting last month, the city’s Traffic and Transportation Commission recommended that the bumps be installed.

More than 75% of residents along the street had signed a petition requesting the bumps.

“People get off that freeway (California 23) and they are flying,” resident Jack Wood told the council at Tuesday night’s meeting. “They have the mentality that they are still on the freeway.”

Councilwoman Judy Lazar said she was concerned that installing the bumps on Calle Tulipan could increase traffic on nearby Calle Bouganvilla, where Park Oaks School is located.

The council asked that traffic patterns on that street be monitored by staff and that letters be sent to residents of Calle Bouganvilla to notify them about the bumps on neighboring street.
