LA PALMA : New Reservoir Doubles Water Supply

Share

More water--almost double the amount previously available--is on tap for the city with completion this week of a new reservoir.

The reservoir has been under construction for the past two years and has cost the city $1,736,019, said Public Works Director Ismile H. Noorbaksh.

The project’s costs ran 3% over the bid amount because of weather and terrain difficulties, Noorbaksh added. Money for the reservoir came from the city’s redevelopment fund.

“The importance of this is that it provides the city with the flow necessary to put out fires, plus it develops the holding capacity of the city’s water system,” Noorbaksh said.

“We previously only had (water) capacity for about 2 1/2 million gallons. Now, (the new reservoir) increases capacity to about 4 1/2 million gallons. So this provides capacity we need for emergency purposes in the event of a disaster, such as fires or an earthquake.

“It also provides access for new businesses wanting to come into the city. We can assure them that we do have necessary flow of water they may need.”
