A 25-year-old woman was killed and her 18-month-old son slightly injured Thursday when the vehicle in which they were riding veered off the road and flipped over in a remote desert area east of Lancaster, authorities said.

Lonnie Hauser of Palmdale was driving north on 150th Street East, near Avenue J about 9:30 a.m. when her 1978 Jeep drifted onto the right shoulder, California Highway Patrol Officer Miguel Siordia said.

The woman turned sharply to the left to get back on the road, but the vehicle continued across the roadway to the opposite side and flipped over, he said.

The Jeep’s removable hardtop came off and Hauser was thrown out of the vehicle even though she was wearing a lap belt, the officer said. Her son, Kurt Hauser, was secured in a child seat and remained in the vehicle.

The mother and son were taken by helicopter to Antelope Valley Hospital, where Hauser died at 11:07 a.m., Siordia said. Her son was treated for bruises and scrapes but was not seriously injured, the officer said.
