About 2,000 people were evacuated from their homes and offices Thursday after authorities found a possible bomb attached to two large propane tanks.

Bomb squad members removed the device and rendered it safe at about 6:30 p.m., said Lt. Herb Davidson of the Shasta County Sheriff’s Department.

Investigators planned to dismantle the bomb, which appeared to be a “genuine explosive device,” Davidson said. Authorities would not describe it.

The device caused concern because it was attached to the propane tanks and an explosion could have devastated everything for several blocks, said Sheriff’s Sgt. Arlin Markin.

All homes and businesses within a one-mile radius of the industrial area south of downtown were evacuated after authorities discovered the bomb Thursday morning.

Those evacuated were allowed to return Thursday night.

Authorities discovered the device after an anonymous caller directed deputies to the site shortly after 8 a.m.
