BURBANK : Cleanup Questioned at Site Near Schools
Lockheed Corp.’s plans to clean contaminated soil by pumping up to 40 pounds a day of potentially cancer-causing substances into the air has come into question by the Burbank Unified School District.
Board members made their position official during a meeting Thursday.
“We voted 5-to-0 to request an environmental impact report because we just feel we have a real, vested interest in this,” board member Elena Hubbell said. “We have students who are most certainly going to be affected by this. We want to know what the pluses and minuses are up front.”
George Washington Elementary School, Providencia Elementary School and Monterey High School are located near a 90-acre lot that was once the site of Lockheed’s B-1 plant.
Lockheed is trying to clean the land of contaminants to comply with federal orders and wants to build a vapor extraction system of wells, pipes and filters.
The plan has been criticized by many residents.
