NORTHRIDGE : Belated Dedication Set for Train Station

Share

The Metrolink station in Northridge has been in operation since February, but it has never been an official station on the line.

That’s all to be remedied today when the station--built in just five days to relieve transportation problems caused by the Northridge earthquake--is dedicated with a country western carnival, games and a “Metrolink Hayride.”

The station was one of eight emergency stops throughout the San Fernando, Santa Clarita and Antelope valleys to be pressed into service within 60 days of the temblor.

“Typically, it takes eight months to build a station,” said Peter Hidalgo, Metrolink spokesman. “Because of the incredible cooperation between the county, state and federal governments, many red-tape procedures were eliminated.

“It’s incredible what can be done when people are working together.”

The belated dedication event will commence at 11 a.m. with public addresses from transportation officials. The country western carnival will feature pony rides, a merry-go-round, cowboy clowns and hay bales set up throughout the Northridge station parking lot.

In commemoration of the event, Metrolink will also be offering free “hay rides” during the morning and afternoon to the Northridge station from both the Van Nuys and Chatsworth stations.

“We want to provide an opportunity to sample the clean, fast and safe train service at no cost,” said Hidalgo. “This special weekend service is a treat to anyone who wants to take advantage of it.”

The Northridge Metrolink Station is located at 8775 Wilbur Ave.
