Are there no false-advertising laws?

Race Express, Cal State Northridge’s opponent in an exhibition game Saturday night, bills itself as a run-and-gun outfit of former college players.

That’s about half right. Many of them did play for small colleges.

But how about the team’s other slogan, “The Wizards of Ahhhs”?

More like the wizards of whoops.

Northridge did most of the running and gunning in a 107-66 victory.

Mike Dorsey, Ruben Oronoz and Eric Gray, a trio of newcomers, provided most of the offensive punch for the Matadors, who had a 56-29 lead at halftime.

Dorsey, a 6-foot-6 transfer from Los Angeles City College, scored 23 points. Oronoz, who redshirted last season after transferring from Rancho Santiago College, added 17.

Gray, came off the bench to score 15 points, hitting the first of his three three-point baskets two seconds after entering the game.

Derrek Byrd, who CSUN Coach Pete Cassidy once tried to recruit out of Skyline College, scored 21 points for Race Express.

Northridge, 8-18 last season, plays the Australian national team Tuesday night--the Matadors’ final tuneup before opening Saturday against UCLA at Pauley Pavilion.

“I saw some good things tonight,” Cassidy said. “Of course, we still have many, many things to work on.”

Of course. UCLA has a few more things going for it than Race Express, a team with uniforms which trumpet its sponsor, a “House of Catfish and Ribs.”
