VAN NUYS : Police Arrest Man Sought in Slaying
Los Angeles police detectives nabbed a murder suspect after they spotted him using a pay phone near the Van Nuys Police Station, a detective said Monday.
Merdice Minifield, 28, of Los Angeles was arrested on suspicion of murder in the Oct. 20 killing of Johnny Freeman Jr., 26, of Panorama City, who was shot to death in an alley near the 14300 block of Roscoe Boulevard, Detective Stephen Fisk said.
Minifield was arrested last Thursday. “Detectives saw him on the phone, they recognized him and they arrested him,” Fisk said.
Police believe Minifield was one of two men seen walking with Freeman toward a parked car in the alley. Minifield allegedly shot Freeman several times and then fled in the car with the other man, Fisk said.
Fisk said the motive for the killing was probably revenge.
“These two people (Minifield and Freeman) didn’t have a dispute, but there had been a dispute between Minifield and some of the people that (Freeman) had associated with,” said Fisk.
