Supervisors-Elect to Attend CEO Talks

Ventura County’s two newly elected supervisors will be included in board discussions on replacing outgoing chief administrator Richard Wittenberg, officials said Tuesday.

After meeting in closed session, the Board of Supervisors agreed Tuesday to invite Judy Mikels and Frank Schillo, who will be sworn in Jan. 3, to future meetings regarding the selection of a new county manager.

Schillo said it is important that the two incoming supervisors participate in the search for Wittenberg’s successor.

He said that he had talked earlier to Supervisors Vicky Howard and John Flynn about being included in the board’s discussions, but that it had not been made clear until Tuesday whether that was legally possible.

Supervisor Maggie Kildee said the board plans to meet in closed session next Tuesday to discuss naming an interim manager as well as finding a permanent replacement.

Wittenberg, the county’s top executive for 16 years, surprised officials last week by announcing that he will step down Jan. 23 to take a job in Santa Clara County. He said he accepted the new job because he wanted the challenge of working in a more urban county.
