COLLEGE FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : ACROSS THE NATION : Oklahoma State’s Jones Resigns

Pat Jones resigned as Oklahoma State’s football coach Tuesday to let someone else guide a program still trying to recover from NCAA sanctions leveled 5 1/2 years ago.

Jones won 62 games in his 11 years, more than any coach in school history. But the Cowboys had six consecutive losing seasons and have gone winless in the Big Eight during three of the past four years.

Jones said victories and losses had far less to do with his decision than the need to upgrade facilities and improve funding in order to put the Cowboys on equal footing with other Big Eight schools.

Jones’ resignation leaves the state’s two major universities without coaches. On Monday, Gary Gibbs resigned at Oklahoma, effective at the end of the season.

Nebraska quarterback Tommie Frazier will not receive an extra year of college eligibility to make up for a season cut short by recurring blood clots. The NCAA administrative review panel denied Frazier’s appeal for medical hardship.

A junior, Frazier played in the Kickoff Classic as well as regular-season games against Texas Tech, UCLA and in nine plays of the first quarter of the game against Pacific before being hospitalized with a blood clot in his leg.

Another clot formed about a week after drugs dissolved the first clot. Frazier has stayed sidelined because the blood thinners he must take prevent him from having contact in practice or a game.

The university argued that the Kickoff Classic should be considered like bowl games, and Frazier’s play in that game should not be counted toward his eligibility.
