TORRANCE : Adult Education Center Opens at Ex-Navy Site

Share

The Torrance Unified School District opened its first new school since the 1960s this fall.

The Adult Education Center is expected to serve about 40,000 students each year.

The site, which served as a food storage facility for the Navy during World War II, was donated by the military to the school district. Cleaning up the site and stationing 16 portable classrooms and an administrative building on the property cost the district $1.1 million, school officials said.

A bulge in the middle school population forced the district to reclaim Newton and Jefferson middle schools, which had been used as adult schools. Newton Middle School was renamed Richardson Middle School to honor former Torrance School Supt. Edward Richardson.

All of the adult classes previously offered at the two schools have been moved to the new facility. Students at the school take classes in English, business and marketing. They also may study to acquire their high school diplomas.

The Adult Education Center is on the east side of Wilson Park at 2291 Washington Ave. in Torrance.
