LONG BEACH : Children’s Choir to Sing at White House

Share

The International Children’s Choir of Long Beach will perform at the White House next week in a ceremony to open the holiday season.

The 60-member choir has been invited to sing Dec. 1 at 10 a.m. as First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton accepts the official Christmas tree. Choir members ages 5 to 17 will be dressed in a variety of national folk costumes representing various countries. They will perform international dances and sing songs in several languages including their anthem, “Let There Be Peace on Earth.”

The choir, which consists mostly of children from Long Beach public schools, was invited to the White House after coordinator Marcia Reed sent a letter to President Clinton offering to have the children perform.

A Long Beach institution for 37 years, the choir has toured nationally and throughout the world, but this will be its first appearance in Washington, Reed said.

The children’s families will pay for the trip. To help defray expenses, the choir is holding fund-raisers and accepting donations. Contributions can be sent to the International Children’s Choir of Long Beach, P.O. Box 13098, Long Beach, Calif. 90803.
