NEVER TOO BOARD: Four-term County Supervisor Roger...

NEVER TOO BOARD: Four-term County Supervisor Roger R. Stanton, who soon will become the senior member of the board, has no shortage of hats to wear. . . . He’s on boards for the county’s Transportation Authority, Housing Authority, Sanitation District and El Toro Re-Use Planning Authority--as well as the county Law Library. He also hosts a cable-TV public affairs show. . . . This week, the Fountain Valley Republican got even busier: He was appointed by Gov. Pete Wilson to serve on the non-salaried board of the state Film Commission.

SHE CAME ANYWAY: Popular Mexican actress-singer Lucero was a huge hit at a recent Anaheim mariachi concert, but she says she had strong misgivings about showing up because of California’s support of Proposition 187. . . . Lucero says her fellow country people urged her to boycott because of the measure. But says Lucero: “I wanted to show support for Latinos who live here.”

DON’T ASK: When Election Day victor Caryl Lee takes over from incumbent Dan C. Dutcher in Municipal Court in Westminster, that will make 19 women judges on Orange County benches--just 18%--with still just four on the Superior Court. . . . That’s fewer than when Appellate Court Justice Sheila P. Sonenshine (above) was on the Superior Court bench in the early 1980s. How many women judges should there be? . . . . Remarked Sonenshine: “I can’t say a number. When no one ever has to ask the question, then there will be enough.”

TOO JUDGMENTAL? Sonenshine was the only Santa Ana appellate justice on the November ballot. Though she’s highly respected by lawyers and colleagues, you couldn’t tell it by the ballots: She was confirmed, but more than 225,000--almost 47%--voted against confirming her for a 12-year term. She chose not to speculate on their thinking when asked. But one in the legal profession suggested: “Some people just don’t like judges.”
