WESTMINSTER : City Council Gives Business High Sign

Share

Acting on a promise to be more business-friendly, the City Council has readily granted an auto dealer’s request to construct business signs more visible from the Garden Grove Freeway.

With little discussion, council members allowed Showcase Auto Mall to erect a taller and wider sign at 5400 Garden Grove Blvd., overturning a Planning Commission ruling earlier this month that set the sign’s height at 30 feet.

The 35-foot-tall pylon sign--supported by two poles--is one of two signs Showcase Auto Mall plans to install in a three-building complex now is under construction. The other is a 677-square-foot sign, more than three times larger than the code limit, which the council also approved.

Officials said approval of the huge sign was justified because it will be part of the architectural feature of the building where it will be installed.

“They need all the help they can get in that area,” said Councilman Tony Lam. City officials have pledged to cut red tape whenever possible to help local businesses.

The auto mall will house one of the biggest Chevrolet dealerships in Orange County, and will feature the Chevrolet Image 2000 program, which is being promoted nationwide.
