‘House of Angels’

The spirit of Jean Renoir seems to hover over Colin Nutley’s funny and endearing 1992 film set in a Swedish village, the perfect spot to observe timeless human comedy. The village is rocked when an entertainer (Helena Bergstrom, pictured, with Rikard Wolff), as uninibited as she is stunning, descends upon them. She is the granddaughter the village people never knew their recently deceased local squire (Per Oscarsson) had. Not only do she and her colorful friends shock and titillate the community, but a prosperous local farmer (Sven Wollter) becomes determined to acquire Oscarsson’ estate--no matter what it takes. Fun and full of surprises. (Cinemax, Wednesday at 8 p.m.)
