After Joe Montana left the field with a foot injury, almost everything went wrong for the Kansas City Chiefs.

And things could get worse if Montana’s injury turns out to be serious.

The Seattle Seahawks scored 10 points in the fourth quarter Sunday to defeat Kansas City, 10-9, dropping the Chiefs two games behind San Diego in the AFC West.

The lone positive for Montana and the Chiefs was that, with 163 yards passing, the 38-year-old quarterback surpassed 40,000 career yards, only the fifth NFL quarterback to do so. The others are Fran Tarkenton, Dan Marino, Dan Fouts and Johnny Unitas.

After the game, the Chiefs were tight-lipped about the seriousness of Montana’s injury.

“I can’t tell you anything at this time,” Coach Marty Schottenheimer said before boarding a bus to the airport.

Montana didn’t make himself available to the media, and the Chiefs’ public relations director, Bob Moore, did not get off the bus to answer questions.

The Chiefs (7-5) initially said Montana had a sprained left foot, but that was before X-rays were taken.

Montana apparently was injured with about six minutes gone in the third quarter when he threw an incomplete pass on a third-and-11 play. He was hit by three defenders and fell hard to the AstroTurf.

Montana came back out the next time the Chiefs had the ball and ran one play--a handoff. After Steve Bono replaced him with 5:04 left in the quarter, the Chiefs’ trainers looked at Montana’s foot and sent him to the locker room.

Seattle’s winning points came on John Kasay’s 32-yard field goal with 1:42 to play, giving the Seahawks their second consecutive come-from-behind victory after six losses in a row.

On the Chiefs’ lasts possession, Lake Dawson fumbled after catching a pass with 1:01 left, and Robert Blackmon recovered and returned it 17 yards to the Kansas City 15.
