Student Journal Is Taking Submissions

Orange County writers and artists are invited to submit their work to the 12th edition of The Elephant Ear, a journal published by the Irvine Valley College School of Humanities and Languages.

The submission deadline is Jan. 23. The journal accepts essays, short fiction and poetry. Artwork that can be reproduced in black and white will also be accepted for review.

U.S., Japanese Teams Compete in Regatta

Orange Coast College is hosting sailing teams from throughout the United States and Japan at the sixth annual United States-Japan Intercollegiate Goodwill Regatta, which began last week. Co-hosted by the Newport Harbor Yacht Club, the event is considered the premier intercollegiate dinghy racing event in the world, according to college officials. It is being staged at Orange Coast College’s Intercollegiate Sailing and Rowing Base on Pacific Coast Highway, in the North Lido Channel next to the Balboa Bay Club.

Saddleback Wins 34 Journalism Awards

Students from Saddleback College took home 34 awards from the Journalism Assn. of Community Colleges, Southern California Conference, held recently in Norwalk.

Writers from the student newspaper, the Lariat, won four first-place awards, two second-place awards, seven third-place awards and 11 honorable mentions.

Writers from the student magazine, Inkslinger, captured two first-place awards, one second-place award and one fourth-place award and two honorable mentions.

Among some of the winners in the on-the-spot competition were Josh Prizer of Laguna Niguel, first place in copy editing and third in editorial writing; Janet Vick of Mission Viejo, first place in critical review and first place in full-page layout; Stacy Brown of San Clemente, second place in advertising design, and San Felsenfeld of Lake Forest, second place in the sports story category.

OCC Re-Entry Center to Host Open House

A holiday open house is planned from noon to 3 p.m. Dec. 8 at the Re-Entry Center of Orange Coast College. Holiday treats and refreshments will be served.

The Re-Entry Center is designed to assist people who are returning to school, especially those who are making career changes and seeking to acquire new job skills.
