PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAMS : Miller Blames Others for Miscues

Share

Quarterback Chris Miller, who will start again next Sunday against New Orleans, continues to point the finger at others for his failures on the field.

Miller, who blamed center Bern Brostek’s wet pants earlier this season for his errant passes, threw four interceptions Sunday and suggested that the first of them could have been avoided had Ram coaches in the press box taken notice of the Chargers’ defense. He also targeted wide receiver Jessie Hester for dropping two passes and running the wrong route against the Chargers.

“The third interception should never have happened,” Miller said. “I hit (Hester) twice in the hands, big plays, and we have a couple of drops there. Then we call the last route, we worked on it all week, talked about how we want to run it . . . I put the ball right where it needed to be put and we didn’t get what we wanted on that route.”

Charger cornerback Sean Vanhorse stepped in front of Hester, intercepted Miller’s pass and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown.

Miller had singled out wide receiver Flipper Anderson for running the wrong route, which resulted in an interception, in an earlier loss to Green Bay.

Miller was trying to throw to Anderson again Sunday when Charger cornerback Darrien Gordon intercepted his pass in the end zone to preserve a 21-14 lead. After the game Miller said that, given another chance, he would make the same throw again.

Coach Chuck Knox, asked Monday how many of Miller’s four interceptions were the quarterback’s fault, said, “Well, the one down on the goal line, he was trying to scramble out, thought he could get it in there (to Anderson) and he got it picked off. I’m sure he’d like to have that back.”

Knox stopped talking then, offering no further comment on Miller’s play.

Knox said rookie wide receiver Isaac Bruce will sit out the next three to four weeks because of a knee sprain and the team will probably promote free agent wide receiver Jermaine Ross from the practice squad.

Fourth-string quarterback Jamie Martin might not want to answer the telephone today if the Rams elect not to put Bruce on injured reserve and release another player to make room for Ross.
