NEWBURY PARK : Toddler Found Safe After Standoff

Share

A 2-year-old girl was found sleeping in her home early Tuesday, shortly after her father ended a six-hour standoff with sheriff’s deputies at the Newbury Park residence, authorities said.

A Special Weapons and Tactics team was called to the home in the 700 block of Ruth Drive about 11:30 p.m. Monday after Debra Boynton called police to report that her husband, Thomas Boynton, had brandished a handgun.

Debra Boynton, 27, told officers that she had argued with her husband earlier in the evening and fled the home when he showed her the 9-millimeter handgun in his waistband. Debra Boynton said she was concerned for the safety of the couple’s daughter, who was still in the home, authorities said.

The SWAT team, working with a hostage negotiating team, entered the home about 5:15 a.m. and found the toddler sleeping in her bed. Thomas Boynton, 31, was briefly taken into custody and then released, authorities said.

An investigation of Boynton for suspicion of being under the influence of a controlled substance is continuing, officials said.
