SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

County Supervisor Harriett M. Wieder this week presented Cypress with a $5,000 county grant to be used for computers for senior citizens.

The money will also buy computer programs and other software to be used with the new equipment, said Marvin DeCarlo, the city’s director of recreation and parks.

“The new computers will be placed in the senior citizen center, and the seniors will be able to use the computers to network with other seniors on computers,” DeCarlo said. “This money from the county is a much-appreciated gift and will be put to immediate use.”

Wieder, whose supervisorial district includes Cypress, came in person to present the money as part of her farewell to elective office. She declined to seek reelection Nov. 8 and will retire after this year.

“It’s my swan song,” Wieder told the council and council audience. “We’ve come a long, long way in the 16 years that I’ve served the 2nd (Supervisorial) District and the city of Cypress.”

Council members, in thanking Wieder for the funds, also praised her years on the County Board of Supervisors. They said that Wieder, a former Huntington Beach mayor, had been diligent in caring for the needs of cities in her district.
