LOS ANGELES : Edelman Suggests Deputy for Temporary Council Seat

Share

Departing Supervisor Ed Edelman said no thanks Wednesday to a suggestion that he temporarily fill Supervisor-elect Zev Yaroslavsky’s City Council seat, but offered his chief deputy for the job instead.

Edelman held the council seat before Yaroslavsky and now will be succeeded by the Westside veteran on the County Board of Supervisors.

The supervisor strongly recommended “that the City Council give consideration to appointing my chief deputy, Bob Geoghegan, to the City Council’s seat until July, 1995, when the new city councilman will be elected.”

On Friday, Edelman--who opted not to run for a sixth term--will leave the Board of Supervisors after 20 years. Three days later, Yaroslavsky will be sworn in.

Fifth District residents are clamoring for an interim council replacement because they are worried that otherwise their interests will be ignored until July. Some people suggested that Edelman would be the perfect substitute until the new council member is elected. Yaroslavsky’s wife, Barbara, is running for the seat.

The council can appoint a successor to Yaroslavsky with a simple majority vote but in the past has shied away from filling such vacancies.
