Santa Clarita / Antelope Valley : Man Subdued After 6-Hour Standoff : Placerita Canyon: Mark Edwards is captured after allegedly threatening his roommate and shooting at deputies.

A man who threatened a roommate with a gun and barricaded himself in his house for six hours was subdued by sheriff’s deputies using tear gas and a dog, authorities said Wednesday.

Mark Edwards, 27, was captured outside his Placerita Canyon home after a number of shots were fired from a handgun at deputies.

Edwards was treated at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia for three dog bites and a broken nose, then booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon at the Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles in lieu of $300,000 bail.

Edwards’ 32-year-old roommate, who declined to give his name, said that about 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, Edwards was having delusions about losing his home and put a gun to the roommate’s head.

“It’s not like he snapped and planned to shoot people up,” the man said. “He wanted to protect his house.” The man said he was able to walk safely from the house.

Deputies, including a special enforcement team from East Los Angeles, surrounded the house and closed off the dirt roads and driveways leading to other homes in the rural area. Edwards spoke to police by telephone briefly at 4:30 p.m.

At 8:15 p.m., his sister pleaded through a loudspeaker with Edwards, who still refused to leave.

Deputies fired nine tear-gas cartridges inside at 9:20 p.m. He responded by returning fire with a .40-caliber semiautomatic handgun. No one was hit.

“We found seven empty shell casings from the gun in the room where Edwards was shooting at deputies, plus other evidence he was shooting toward them,” Sgt. Howard Fairchild said.

More tear-gas was fired into the house about 15 minutes later, causing Edwards to come onto the porch, where he was subdued by a police dog.

Deputies searching the house Wednesday found the handgun, still loaded with three rounds, plus an unloaded rifle with 200 to 300 rounds of ammunition nearby, Fairchild said. He said they also found pipes and other drug paraphernalia but no drugs.
